The “Haryana Banao Abhiyan” has garnered open support from intellectuals and social workers, aiming to preserve Haryana’s heritage, culture, and honor. M.S. Chopra, former Deputy Secretary of the Indian government and Principal OSD during Bhupendra Singh Hooda’s tenure, discussed the campaign’s importance in a media interaction. He questioned why, with a distinct identity and separate households, Haryana’s capital should not be established on its own soil. Chopra emphasized the need to take essential steps for the culture, prestige, and progress of Haryana. He highlighted that every citizen of Haryana wishes to see their capital on their land. Chopra mentioned that various regions worldwide have established multiple capitals to expedite the pace of development.
He stressed that Haryana needs to adapt to the current need for regional development. He cited examples like Uttarakhand, which separated from Haryana 32 years ago. He also mentioned countries like South Africa, Israel, and Brazil, which have multiple capitals to ensure equal rights and development. Chopra expressed the desire for a well-balanced region with sufficient connectivity, excellent environmental conditions, and rich culture.
Chopra acknowledged that some argue that demanding a separate capital weakens the Union Territory’s rights. To counter this, he posed a rhetorical question about an individual building a second home and being denied rights over the first. He criticized such arguments as untenable.
He praised Haryana’s folk songs and endorsed the campaign as a positive initiative. He believed that the state’s identity and pride would be enhanced through the achievements of stars like Neeraj Chopra and Sakshi Malik. However, he noted that Chandigarh does not celebrate these achievements, and the global recognition of Haryana’s voice, music, and culture remains unrealized.
