In today’s era of social media, where influencers often push boundaries for engaging content, a Chilean influencer and gymnast has stirred controversy, raising concerns about cultural sensitivity and respect for religious symbols.
The Controversial Video
Maria del Mar ‘Marimar’ Perez Banus, known for her vibrant social media presence, faced backlash after posting a video on her Instagram, which she later deleted. In the footage, Perez was seen using a Torii, a sacred gate marking the entrance to Shinto shrines, as gym equipment for pull-ups. She performed the routine while swinging her legs to DJ Casper’s Cha Cha Slide, seemingly unaware of the Torii’s cultural and religious importance in Japan.
The Torii symbolizes the boundary between the earthly and the divine, making her actions particularly offensive to many viewers. Despite her lighthearted intention, the video was deemed disrespectful, leading to a wave of criticism across social media.
Apology and Online Reactions
In response to the backlash, Perez posted an apology video, stating, “I want to apologise for my actions in Japan. I didn’t mean to be rude. I’m really sorry for what I did without thinking. Please, no more messages or comments. Thank you.” However, her apology did not fully appease those upset by her actions.
The online reaction was mixed. While some criticized her lack of respect for cultural symbols, with comments like, “It’s alarming how influencers often ignore cultural symbols for views,” others highlighted the need for greater cultural sensitivity. One user said, “This isn’t just about fitness; it’s about respect for tradition,” while another added, “Cultural appropriation in the name of entertainment should not be tolerated.”
However, a portion of her followers defended her, believing her intent was not harmful. “She’s just trying to have fun; can’t we give her a break?” one user wrote, while another added, “Mistakes happen; let’s learn from them instead of tearing each other down.”
