Low-cost carrier IndiGo has launched a scheme that allows a passenger to book 2 seats to ensure additional safety amid the coronavirus pandemic. The charges for the extra seat will be effectively up to 25 per cent of the original booking cost. This offer is effective travel starting 24 July 2020.

“This scheme will provide a stress-free flying experience to customers. With this service, customers can book two seats for one person. We had been receiving such requests and are happy to introduce the option to book two seats for a single passenger to ensure additional safety” IndiGo said in a statement.

 As per Indigo this scheme will not be available through travel portals, IndiGo call centre or airport counters. Customers will be able to opt for double seat only at the time of booking creation on IndiGo’s website, which will be available for both passengers as well as the travel agents

The airline also said that extra baggage won’t be allowed with the extra seat. “Regular change and cancellation charges based on the type of fare purchased will be applicable on the extra seat. The extra seat booking will not be entitled to additional baggage allowance for customers,” the statement read.

As per the online survey done by Indigo between 20 June and 28 June among 25,000 travellers, the lack of social distancing by other passengers is a top concern among flyers. 

“Factors such as lack of social distancing by other passengers (62% of respondents), quarantine measures by states (55%) and sitting in the aircraft with so many people (55%) have been identified as key deterrents for air travel,” the survey said.

IndiGo’s chief strategy and revenue officer Sanjay Kumar said, “Even though air travel is the safest mode of travel at this point, we understand the customers’ emotional need for safety. We had been receiving such requests and are happy to introduce the option to book two seats for a single passenger to ensure additional safety.”
