New Delhi, November 29: India’s relationship with Canada continues to face challenges, largely due to the political space provided by the Canadian government to extremist and secessionist elements promoting an anti-India agenda. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh addressed the issue in the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing that such groups misuse Canada’s freedoms to advocate violence and threaten India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

India’s Concerns Highlighted

The Minister stressed that mutual respect for territorial integrity and sovereignty is essential for a stable bilateral relationship. India has repeatedly urged Canada to take effective action against these groups, which engage in activities such as:

  • Glorifying the assassination of Indian leaders.
  • Issuing threats to Indian political leadership and diplomats.
  • Vandalizing places of worship.
  • Holding so-called “referendums” to promote India’s balkanization.

Focus on Indian Nationals

Singh reiterated that the safety and security of Indian nationals living, working, and studying in Canada remain a top priority for the Indian government. Issues affecting them are consistently raised with Canadian authorities for prompt resolution.

Diplomatic Security Concerns

While Canadian authorities have provided security cover to Indian diplomats and diplomatic properties, they have expressed their inability to secure Consular Camps against the threats posed by violent extremist groups.

Strained Ties

India’s concerns over rising extremism in Canada have led to a sharp deterioration in bilateral ties. Singh underlined the urgency for the Canadian government to address these issues to foster a relationship based on mutual respect and cooperation.
