India recorded 29,164 new Covid-19 infections in the last 24 hours—less than 30,000 in a day for the first time in over four months. The country’s total coronavirus case count since the January outbreak stands at 88,74,291 including 4,53,401 active cases and 82,90,371 recoveries. The cumulative deaths climbed to 1,30,519 after 449 new deaths.
This is the tenth day when India reported less than 50,000 cases in a day. The last time daily new cases crossed the 50,000-threshold was on 7 November. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 8,44,382 samples for Covid-19 were tested on 16 November while 12,65,42,907 samples have been tested so far.
Delhi recorded 3,797 fresh Covid-19 cases and its tally climbed to over 489,000, meanwhile the death toll stands at 7,713 with 99 new fatalities. Delhi Chief
Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday sent a proposal to the Central Government seeking permission to impose lockdown in market areas, which he said may emerge as Covid-19 hotspots. He appealed to the people of the city, “with folded hands”, to wear masks and follow social distancing norms. He said his government, the Centre and other agencies are doubling efforts to control the situation in the national capital. Delhi has reported lower numbers in the last two days but this can be attributed to a decrease in testing. It remains, however, the highest contributor to India’s Covid-19 caseload.
Mumbai reported 541 new coronavirus cases, 1565 people were discharged and 14 died due to the virus. Total cases rise to 2,70,654 including 2,47,339 recoveries/discharges and 10,596 deaths. Active cases stand at 8946.
Punjab reported 515 new Covid-19 cases, 265 people were discharged, meanwhile, 30 people succumbed to the virus. Total cases in the state rise to 1,42,597 including 1,32,266 recoveries and 4,510 deaths. Active cases stand at 5,821.
Rajasthan recorded 2,194 fresh coronavirus cases and 11 deaths on Tuesday, taking the total number of positive cases to 2,30,180 and fatalities to 2,089. Jaipur, Jodhpur and Sikar reported two deaths each and Ajmer, Churu, Karauli, Kota and Pali recorded one death each. Jaipur reported maximum fresh cases with 484 people contracting the virus.
Karnataka reported 1,336 new Covid-19 cases, 2100 people were discharged and 16 died. Total cases in the state rise to 8,64,140 including 8,27,241 discharges and 11,557 deaths. Active cases stand at 25,323.
Tamil Nadu reported 1,652 new Covid-19 cases, 2,314 were discharged and 18 died. Total positive cases in the state rise to 7,61,568 including 7,34,970 discharges and 11,513 deaths.
