She went on to confess, “Let me confess today—I have invested approximately Rs. 8 lakhs in my YouTube channel for building a kitchen, buying studio equipment, and promotions. The return? Rs. 0.
Another post by Nalini reflects her frustration because her investment and hard work towards building her channel received nothing in return from YouTube: “I am angry. Honestly, I’m just really angry with YouTube, the way they don’t help. I spent my money and time, risked even my career to build up the channel, but they won’t give me a return for that. Nalini’s case study reveals the difficulties faced by content creators, mainly concerning visibility and monetization. The YouTube and Instagram platform has made content creation a highly lucrative field; however, most of them use brand collaborations and advertisements to stay on the site and thus have their content visible. Still, Nalini’s story depicts the struggles to monetize content, since several influencers have complained that how algorithms of the platform have hampered their engagement.
Many followers were urging Nalini not to quit with many supporters asking her not to leave. Still, she stood firm with her choice. “I’m overwhelmed by your suggestion not to quit YouTube. Let me remind you—I dedicated 3 years to YouTube, creating over 250 videos. However, I didn’t get the response I had hoped for, so I’ve finally decided to stop making videos and have deleted all my content from the platform.”. She adds, “Online platforms need a bit of luck, so one cannot really rely on them to sustain. Your ‘shop’ can shut down before you wake up the next day,” she explains.
