The Yamuna River in Delhi rose to 207.4 metres on Wednesday, the third-highest level in 60 years. Water from the river flooded low-lying areas in Delhi and parts of Noida. Many residents had to move to safer places.

Authorities issued warnings and closed important bridges. Displaced families are struggling with food, toilets, and basic facilities as heavy rain continues.

Yamuna Crosses Dangerous Level

The Central Water Commission (CWC) reported that the Yamuna crossed 207.4 metres at 9 PM on Wednesday. This is only the fifth time since 1963 that the river has crossed the 207-metre mark. The highest level was 208.66 metres in 2023, followed by 207.49m in 1978, 207.32m in 2013, and 207.11m in 2010.

The current level is much higher than Delhi’s warning mark of 204.5 metres. Low-lying areas along the river are at risk, and people were moved to safer locations. The Old Railway Bridge in Delhi was also closed for safety.

Residents Face Hardships

People in areas like Madanpur Khadar are facing many problems. Many are staying under plastic sheets without proper food, toilets, or cooking facilities.

“All our belongings are inside. We could barely take out a few things. Women are facing a lot of problems as there are no toilets,” said Tayara, a resident.

“Families had no food or utensils and were surviving only on biscuits and buns. We could not bring our cooking essentials, and now we have no facilities to cook – we are surviving on whatever we can buy from the kiosk,” another resident said.

Flooding in Noida

Heavy rains also caused flooding in low-lying areas of Noida. Authorities are working with pumps and drainage systems to control water levels.

Weather Forecast & Safety Advice

Light to moderate rain, thunder, lightning, and winds of 30 to 40 km/h are predicted for Delhi, and portions of Haryana and Punjab by the IMD. Authorities have warned people to avoid low-lying regions close to the Yamuna.

Need for Better Flood Management

This year’s floods show that Delhi and nearby areas are becoming more vulnerable to heavy rains and rising river levels. Experts say better planning and continuous monitoring are needed to prevent repeated flooding problems.
