Who was Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

Born in 1931 in the coastal town of Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu and his early childhood was peppered with poverty with his thirst for knowledge remained unquenchable. He completed school in Ramanathapuram before earning a degree in physics and later pursuing aeronautical engineering at the prestigious Madras Institute of Technology. His humble beginnings transformed from a little town into a scientific pioneer, a story that has continued to inspire generations.

Why We Celebrate October 15: APJ Abdul Kalam’s Birth Anniversary

The 15th of October commemorates the birthday of Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the eleventh President of India, an eminent scientist and a highly esteemed teacher. The day is celebrated to honor Dr. Kalam for his great contributions through science, education and national development and although commonly referred to as “World Students Day,” in India, this day is dedicated in honor of Kalam’s view of empowering young minds through knowledge, innovation and ethical leadership.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: Scientific Achievements That Shaped a Nation

His career was at DRDO and he moved on to ISRO where he was solely responsible for the success of launching India’s first satellite vehicle into space.

This meant that India’s place in the global space community has been cemented back when he returned to DRDO, the successful program was the missile development program that gave birth to the title “Missile Man of India.” His dedication had given India a solid base for self-reliance in defense technology.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: The People’s President & Teaching Soul

In 2002, Dr. Kalam took the reins as the 11th President of the Republic of India. Rather than confining himself to protocols prescribed, he converted the office into one of engagement and inspiration most with the youth known for his enthusiastic sessions with youthful minds, he constantly urged his audience to have faith in themselves, pursue innovation and contribute to their country’s development.

Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam: More than Just Words

Even after he stepped down, Kalam carried on dedicating all his time and energy to education his travelling across the nation to lecture students. Ironically, he died in 2015 while addressing students at IIM Shillong, indicative of his life destiny. As India celebrates his birth anniversary, it ought to serve as a reminder to that blend of educators and leaders on maintaining his ideals, creating an atmosphere of creativity, integrity and lifelong learning.
