The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly criticized the Congress after the party questioned MP Shashi Tharoor for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech. The BJP accused the Congress of having no internal democracy and claimed that it imposes a “fatwa” on leaders who prioritize national interest over family or party politics.

BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “If somebody praises the Prime Minister's speech, which is about larger issues, then a 'fatwa' is issued against that person by the Congress, which talks about democracy in the entire country, but there is no democracy within their party.”

The BJP further remarked that the Indian National Congress (INC) should be referred to as the ‘Indira Nazi Congress,’ pointing to what it described as a dictatorial mindset reminiscent of Indira Gandhi’s Emergency era.

Sashi Tharoor Praises Modi Despite Illness

Shashi Tharoor, in a detailed post on X, lauded PM Modi’s speech delivered at the sixth Ramnath Goenka Lecture, organized by the Indian Express. Tharoor mentioned that he attended the event despite battling a severe cold and cough.

He wrote, “PM Modi said he’d been accused of being in ‘election mode’ all the time, but he was really in ‘emotional mode’ to redress the problems of the people.”

Tharoor highlighted PM Modi’s reference to Thomas Macaulay and his call for Indians to shed the mindset of slavery. “A significant part of the speech was dedicated to overturning Macaulay's 200-year legacy of ‘slave mentality.’ PM Modi appealed for a 10-year national mission to restore pride in India’s heritage, languages, and knowledge systems,” he noted.

Congress Reacts to Sashi Tharoor’s Praise

Following Tharoor’s positive remarks, Congress leader Supriya Shrinate responded critically. She stated that she did not find anything noteworthy in the Prime Minister’s speech.

“I didn't find anything in the speech (of PM Modi) worth appreciating. I think PM must answer a lot of things,” Shrinate said, dismissing Tharoor’s commendation as misplaced.

The controversy comes shortly after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a major victory in the Bihar Assembly elections, where the Congress faced significant losses. Tharoor’s praise of Modi was viewed against this political backdrop, intensifying the debate within the Congress and among opposition parties.
