Mumbai witnessed a major scare on Tuesday evening when a monorail train got stuck near Mysore Colony. The train, carrying more than 200 passengers, stopped on a curve several feet above ground. Officials say the incident happened due to overcrowding during heavy rainfall.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde explained that the train was stranded because it was overloaded. Heavy rain in the city caused more people to board the monorail, which led to the brakes jamming.

BJP MLA Captain Tamil Selvan also blamed overcrowding. “This happened because of the overload of passengers. The passengers should have thought about the train’s capacity. All are safe now. The public should have thought about the limit of the train. BMC and MMRDA arrived here and rescued all the passengers. A major accident has been averted,” he told ANI.

Astik Pandey, joint commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), added, “The capacity of the monorail is 109 metric tonnes. On Tuesday, it was overloaded due to excessive crowds. On a curve, there was a mechanical disconnect of the electric current. After that, the emergency brake was deployed, hence the rake stopped working.”
Rescue Operation in Progress
Passengers were stuck in the monorail for nearly two hours. Authorities tried to tow the four-coach train to the nearest station using another monorail, but the brakes remained jammed.
Rescue teams then used cranes, ladders, and truck-mounted scissor lifts to reach the passengers. Windows of the train were broken carefully to help people get out. Four buses were also deployed to transport passengers home safely.
