Former bandmate and musician Shekhar Jyoti Goswami has been detained by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in connection with the death of famous Assamese singer Zubeen Garg.
The singer passed away on September 19 in Singapore during a yacht trip. Shekhar Goswami's involvement in the case has been called into doubt because it was alleged that he was with him in his last moments.
Shekhar Jyoti Goswami is a musician from Assam, best known as a drummer and longtime bandmate of Zubeen Garg. His Instagram bio also describes him as a sound engineer, music producer, arranger, and computer hardware engineer.
The SIT has not yet said why he has been detained, but since he was with Garg during his last hours, he has become an important person in the investigation.

Reports say Goswami was present on the yacht in Singapore when Zubeen Garg went for his final swim. This has made him a key witness and suspect in the case.
On the same day, police also searched the homes of Northeast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma. Both were not at home during the raids.
Shekhar Goswami was not just a bandmate but also a close musical partner of Zubeen Garg. They performed together at many concerts and events over the years. Fans always saw him as part of Zubeen’s inner circle, so his detention has come as a big shock.
The SIT has not filed any charges against Goswami yet. His detention is part of a wider probe into Garg’s death, which doctors in Singapore initially confirmed as drowning.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has urged people to stay patient, saying: “We have to wait for the SIT’s report. If needed, we can also go for a CBI enquiry.”
Meanwhile, protesters have demanded the arrest of Garg’s manager Siddhartha Sharma, blaming him for the singer’s death. Police even detained two people who were inciting violence outside Sharma’s residence.
The SIT, led by CID special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta, continues to investigate. A second post-mortem was also done at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital on September 23, and the report is awaited.
Goswami’s arrest shows how a person who was once seen as a close friend and bandmate is now under investigation in Zubeen Garg's mysterious death. For fans, the case feels like more than just a search for truth, it also feels like a betrayal by the people closest to the late singer.
