Who Is Raman Rajamannan, Kerala’s Mannan Community ‘King’ Invited to Republic Day?

Raman Rajamannan, the ‘king’ of Kerala’s Mannan community, will attend the 76th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on January 26. He will be accompanied by his wife, Binumol. This is the first time a tribal king from Kerala will participate in the Republic Day parade. Kerala’s Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Backward Classes, OR Kelu, presented the invitation to Rajamannan.

Travel and Expenses

Rajamannan and his wife traveled to Delhi on Wednesday. The Scheduled Caste Development Department is covering their travel expenses, as confirmed by Minister Kelu on social media. After the parade, the couple will visit various places in Delhi and return on February 2.

Traditional Attire for the Occasion

For this special occasion, Rajamannan will wear traditional clothes, including headgear (thalappavu). He will be assisted by two ministers and soldiers during the events.

Role of the Tribal King

Rajamannan is the leader of 300 Mannan families in Idukki district, where he oversees community affairs. Although he has no civil rights or duties, he plays a key role in community rituals and festivities. He took over as king in 2012 after the death of Aryan Rajamannan. Despite his royal status, he leads a simple life as a farmer in a modest house. Rajamannan works alongside a team, including four deputies, a prince, and a 50-member council.

Matrilineal Community System

The Mannan community follows a matrilineal system, where women inherit family property. This structure holds significant importance in the community’s traditions and culture.
