The ongoing confrontation between media with the government in India, content creator and independent journalist Ajeet Bharti, who hails from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was recently summoned by local police for interrogation. This inquiry came after Bharti made certain social media comments on an incident where an advocate had allegedly attempted to hurl shoes at BR Gavai, the Chief Justice of India. The initial grapevine suggested that he may have been arrested and the police were quick to clarify that they had summoned Bharti for questioning in relation to one of his posts and had not detained him. 

Who is Ajeet Bharti?

Ajeet Bharti is from Bihar known as a multimedia personality, creating content in the form of video, commentary and satire mainly concerning politics, social issues, matters of judiciary and culture. After having worked in several mainstream organizations, he started this own platform, AB4K Media, on which he provides opinions that are free of mainstream journalism’s biases. His website describes him as a fearless critic of the government, judiciary and media institutions.

Bharti is popularly known for his roast videos, blending political and social satire, which placed Bharti at odds with the Indian judiciary. The Contempt proceedings were entered against him by none other than the attorney general of India in spite of the legal pressure, he has continued to be vociferous and audacious with his criticism.

What Did Bharti Say About the Chief Justice on the Incident?

As per police reports, Bharti was interrogated at the Sector 58 police station before being carried over to the DCP office. Following this incident, social media buzz falsely proclaimed his arrest, which was denied by the police almost immediately thereafter. In the wake of the inquiry, Bharti himself reassured his followers about his status being neither arrested nor in detention.

Meanwhile, the activist Suraj Kumar Bauddh has appealed to the Attorney General to consider contempt of court charges against Bharti and a religious speaker for making alleged inflammatory remarks about CJI on social media, provoking direct attacks against the judiciary.

Social Media Outburst & Legal Challenges

Video clippings from Bharti’s recent YouTube podcasts, now going viral, show him seemingly insulting CJI Gavai, whilst offering encouragement for hostility towards the Chief Justice on the grounds of the Hindu pride. On account of this controversy, Bharti posted a video mocking the shoe-throwing attempt, where he openly described the Chief Justice as an unworthy person and suggested initiating contempt of court proceedings against him.

He made several provocative statements including the sarcastic observation about “shoes sticking” to the CJI, referring to the shoe-throwing incident that shocked the nation. The incident involving a 71-year-old lawyer attempting to assault the Chief Justice in the Supreme Court has drawn widespread condemnation intensifying the discourse.

Freedom of Speech vs. Judicial Respect

The episode raises important issues regarding the equilibrium between free expression and the respect afforded to judicial institutions.
