Abdullah Azam Khan is a prominent Indian political figure whose rise has been shadowed by legal controversies. His recent conviction with his father, senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan, has once again brought his name into the spotlight.

Who Is Abdullah Azam Khan?

Abdullah Azam Khan is an Indian politician from Uttar Pradesh, and the son of veteran Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Azam Khan. He served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Suar constituency in Rampur district. Born on September 30, 1990, in Rampur, he grew up in a politically active family.

His entry into politics came early, and he won his first assembly election in 2017 and became a rising face within the SP. Despite his political lineage, Abdullah’s career has been deeply mired in controversy and legal troubles, which have overshadowed his public work.

Why is Abdullah Azam Khan Convicted?

Abdullah Azam Khan faced two major convictions that rocked his political career. First, he was found guilty along with his father in a fake birth certificate case,  in which the court ruled that they had colluded to issue two different birth certificates for Abdullah — one listing his birth date as September 30, 1990, and the other as January 1, 1993, allegedly so that he could meet the age requirement for contesting elections.

Second, in a separate but related matter, a court convicted both Abdullah and his father in a PAN card forgery case. The court found that the two had obtained two PAN cards under different dates of birth, allegedly to gain an unfair electoral advantage. In both cases, a special MP/MLA court in Rampur sentenced Abdullah and his father to seven years in prison.

Abdullah Azam Khan’s father is Azam Khan, and he is a long-serving SP leader from Rampur. Azam Khan has faced multiple cases, including forgery, land grabbing, and hate speech.  He has been convicted several times and is currently serving a prison sentence.

Abdullah Azam Khan declared total assets of ₹3,28 Crore in his election affidavit. He reported no liabilities, meaning his net worth is roughly equal to his total assets.  In his asset declaration, he listed ₹16.6 lakh in movable assets (such as cash or bank holdings) and ₹3.1 crore in immovable assets—including land and property.

However, his financial situation faces a cloud when a court recently issued a recovery certificate for ₹4.64 crore, claiming that he paid inadequate stamp duty on land purchases.  A court fined him ₹3.7 crore (plus interest) in stamp-duty evasion cases.

Controversies Surrounding Abdullah Azam Khan

Abdullah has been at the centre of several controversies. He and his parents were accused of managing fake birth certificates to contest elections. He allegedly colluded with his father to manipulate PAN card data for electoral gain.

There are also land-grabbing accusations against him and his mother. His legal troubles have triggered debates on political integrity and the influence of dynastic politics.

He contested and won the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from the Suar constituency as an SP candidate.

His role in the party focused on strengthening local support, mobilising youth, and defending SP’s political base in Rampur. However, his growing political graph faced setbacks due to multiple criminal cases, which eventually led to his disqualification from the Assembly. Despite his legal challenges, he remains a recognised SP figure in Uttar Pradesh politics.
