A left-wing member of the ABVP, Deepika Jha, is accused of slapping DUSU joint secretary and ABVP member Professor Sujit Kumar at a disciplinary committee meeting in Delhi. The incident reportedly took place in front of Delhi Police officials, leaving a question mark over campus security and student behavior.
According to police officials, they have received a complaint and have already started the investigation in the case. A cop confirmed, "The video has been screened by the investigators. They are taking CCTV shots now."
The session was called to address a recent campus brawl allegedly involving ABVP members. The day turned sour, however, when Jha turned against Kumar, accusing him of impropriety.
Jha admitted to what she did but claimed she did so in anger. In an interview with HT, "When I told him that I had seen him smoking outside. he verbally abused me." She also accused the professor of repeatedly "staring" and "smirking" at her, making her uncomfortable.
She went on to release an apology clip, stating, "On seeing all this, I got angry and raised my hand. I apologise to the teachers' community."
But Professor Kumar strongly rejected her version. He charged ABVP members with bursting into the meeting illegally and tried to get him to resign. He charged the scuffle as a fallout of a previous incident in which ABVP members had allegedly beaten up an NSUI student at a college event.
Kumar told ANI, "Then a student named Deepika came and slapped me, like one can see in the video clip."
The 32-second video clip said to be CCTV footage shows Jha rising and slapping Kumar as some people, including cops, were present around them. A woman constable is noticed coming forward immediately to move them apart.
