A violent outbreak during an election campaign has unsettled Bihar’s political environment, fueling sharp criticism among parties. Dularchand Yadav was fatally shot in Mokama after gunfire erupted during the campaign. The event has intensified worries over law and order and the escalating nature of political contests in Bihar.

What Exactly Happened?

The incident occurred on Thursday in Patna’s Mokama area, a high-stakes constituency for the upcoming assembly elections. When things got violent, Dularchand Yadav was supporting Piyush Priyadarshi, the candidate of the Jan Suraaj Party. While gunshots were reported, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the exact cause of death. Patna’s Senior Superintendent of Police, Kartikeya K. Sharma, stated that the police have not yet received the victim’s body for a postmortem. This has made it impossible to confirm if Yadav died from bullet injuries or in an accidental manner.

The Political Players: Who is Involved?

The Mokama constituency has always been a crucial and controversial front in Bihar’s politics. Tensions have only increased as a result of the ongoing contest between two former gangsters who are now politicians. JD(U)’s candidate is Anant Singh, while RJD has nominated Veena Devi, wife of the barred leader Surajbhan Singh. This power struggle provides the backdrop for the fatal shooting incident.

What Does This Mean for Democracy?

Political leaders have responded strongly to the assassination, each interpreting it to emphasize their concerns. The Jan Suraaj Party, to which the victim belonged, condemned the act in the strongest terms. The party’s state president, Manoj Bharti, labeled the killing an “assault on our democratic rights.” He accused rival forces of seeking votes by instilling fear and creating an atmosphere reminiscent of ‘jungle raj,’ a term often used to describe lawlessness.

A Question of Law and Order

The opposition has seized the opportunity to question the ruling government’s ability to maintain peace. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav pointedly asked what kind of governance the incident reflects. He stated, “The murder of Dular Chand Yadav… puts a question mark on the law and order situation in the state.” This rhetoric directly challenges the claims of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) about providing a stable and secure administration in Bihar. Meanwhile, Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor confirmed that senior party leaders are on the ground in Mokama assessing the situation.

The Upcoming Electoral Battle

This violent episode has intensified the focus on the Mokama seat just days before polling is scheduled to begin. The assembly elections in Bihar will be held in phases on November 6 and 11. The results for all seats, including the high-tension Mokama constituency, will be declared on November 14. The event guarantees that during the last days of campaigning, concerns about political violence and public safety will be at the forefront.
