The AK-630 is a well-known military equipment, originally Soviet but now employed by Russia and other nations. Its name translates to “Automat Kalashnikov 630” and is a Close-in Weapon System (CIWS). Think of it as a vessel’s last defense. Its primary function is to rapidly detect and eliminate threats such as incoming anti-ship missiles, aircraft, and helicopters that have penetrated a ship’s outer defense. The designation “630” informs you of its most important characteristics: six barrels and firing 30 mm caliber ammunition.
How the AK-630 Functions and Its Capability:
AK-630 is a fully automatic rotary cannon a term sometimes used to refer to the “Gatling-type” gun due to its multiple rotating barrels, which can achieve a very high rate of fire.
AK-630 Firepower and Capacity:
The base AK-630 mount has an enormous rate of fire, generally anywhere from 4,000 to 5,000 rounds per minute (i.e., some 66 to 83 shots per second!). It holds some 2,000 rounds of 30 mm ammunition in its below-deck magazine. Such immense capacity and rate of fire make it form a lethal “wall of steel” to catch rapid-moving targets.
Its maximum range of hitting air targets is approximately 4,000 meters (4 kilometers), or roughly 2.5 miles. It may also be employed against surface targets such as small ships out to a distance of approximately 5,000 meters.

AK-630 Operating Officers:
The AK-630 system is self-operating and remotely controlled from a console inside the ship’s command center. Officers and enlisted men who operate, service, and oversee its operation would normally be weapons officers or gunnery and fire-control specialists, ranks or grades depending on the particular navy’s organization. It’s not directly manned by an individual officer on the turret itself.
AK-630 Price:
The cost of military hardware such as the AK-630 is not disclosed publicly as consumer items. It is sold in government-to-government military sales, and its cost varies based on the particular model, associated radar and fire control systems, quantity bought, and any technology transfer or license production arrangements (such as those that India employs). The price is millions of dollars per system.

Is the AK-630 licensable?
No. The AK-630 is an anti-aircraft, multi-barrel close-in weapon system (CIWS). It is not licensable for civilian or private use anywhere globally. Gun licensing legislations are intended for small-caliber guns for self-defense or sport (such as air guns or small rifles), not for multi-barrel, anti-missile cannons.
