What is Cyclone Montha: Check Landfall Date, Impact Zones & Safety Measures

Cyclone Montha intensifies over Bay of Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, Tamil Nadu on high alert as severe storm approaches coast.

The Deep depression is intensifying itself into a severe cyclonic storm which has been code named Montha and this is expected to make landfall in the Bay of Bengal on October 28. The Andhra Pradesh government has now issued full alert in all coastal and adjoining districts in anticipation of the impending cyclone. The name Montha which means beautiful flower or fragrant flower has been contributed by Thailand.

Cyclone Montha: Present Position & Expected Trajectory

The system is 990 km southeast of Kakinada at the moment on October 26 and is expected to cross the coast between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, probably in the evening or night of October 28. The depression moves west-northwest at around 5 kmph and is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm within the next 12 hours and progress to a severe cyclone by the morning of October 28.

Andhra Pradesh Government Mobilizes Officers

As a proactive measure to make things ready on time and the state government has designated special coverage for all coastal and adjoining districts by assigning eminent IAS officers as Special Officers. Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand directed the establishing of Cyclone Control Rooms in coherence with the District Collectors to oversee the relief and rehabilitation measures, thus ensuring unhindered functioning during the cyclone approach.

Odisha & Tamil Nadu are on High Alert.

Disaster preparedness has been heightened in Odisha anticipating heavy rainfall and winds starting October 28. Tamil Nadu will have light to moderate showers with isolated heavy rainfall on 25-26 and 28th October. Fishermen in those states have received warnings not to put out into the sea due to rough conditions.

Senior Officers Assigned to Coastal Zones

For effective field-level coordination, senior officials have been deployed across various districts RP Sisodia oversees the West Godavari to Chittoor belt, while Ajay Jain manages Visakhapatnam and surrounding districts. Other officers have been designated for Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari, Konaseema, Krishna, NTR, Bapatla, Prakasam, Nellore and Tirupati. Their responsibilities include rescue operations, disbursing compensation and restoring essential services.

Predicted Rainfall & Wind Speeds

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Andhra Pradesh in Yanam and Rayalaseema on October 27-28. Under these circumstances, Odisha may experience strong winds up to 70 km/h, along gusts at some districts reaching 80 km/h. Tamil Nadu is most likely to observe moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers.

Emergency Preparedness Measures

  • Disaster management teams in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu are on high alert.
  • Emergency preparations in health facilities are being made to relocate priority pregnant women and vulnerable populations safely.
  • Residents are advised to follow official advisories, secure property and avoid unnecessary travel during the cyclone’s approach.

Public Advisory for Coastal Residents

People in susceptible areas should collect supplies for that eventuality, secure lose objects inside and stay indoors during high winds and heavy rain. The early preparation fully coordinated management of disaster and timely evacuation will minimize damage and loss of lives. 

Why Cyclone Montha

The cyclone would be officially named Montha as suggested by Thailand and this orientation is in keeping with the regional practice of the World Meteorological Organisation, which encourages the naming of cyclones after regionally significant and culturally important names provided by Member countries. Even though the storm is expected to largely bypass Bengal, moderate rainfall and thunderstorms are expected in Kolkata during October 28-29.
