Is Cyclone Ditwah and Cyclone Senyar are Same?

No, Ditwah and Senyar are not one and the same. They are names given to two different-but closely timed-weather systems:

Similarly, a cyclone named Senyar formed over the Bay of Bengal around the same time and moved away from the Indian coast, heading towards areas like Malaysia/Sumatra. Senyar was a unique or “rarest of rare” storm because it reached cyclonic strength in an unusual location, the Strait of Malacca.

The name Cyclone Ditwah is kept for the next system, which is a deep depression formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal after Senyar moved away.

They are distinct storms, the first one followed by the second.

Cyclone Ditwah: Regions are on Alert

The deep depression, likely to intensify into Cyclone Ditwah, is currently forecasted to move toward the coasts of North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry (Pondicherry), and South Andhra Pradesh in India.

These coastal regions are on alert for a number of possible impacts, including:

Heavy to Very Heavy Rainfall: Expected over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

Strong Winds: It implies increased wind speeds with rough seas, hence not being conducive for going out to sea.

Flooding: Inundation risk is impending over low-lying coastal areas.

Has Cyclone Ditwah Ever Affected India in the Past?

No, India has not been affected by the cyclonic storm Ditwah in the past. Cyclones in this region are named in sequence from a predetermined list.

The name Ditwah was next on the list for a system forming in late 2025, which follows the storm named Senyar. Since the storm with such a name had not been used, this event would be the first time the name would appear.

Therefore, there is no historical record of what occurred when a “Cyclone Ditwah” struck India since this name is being utilized for the current potential storm for the very first time. The impacts are unique to the path and intensity of this developing system.
