What Is CSIR UGC-NET Exams? & Why It Was Postponed By NTA–Explained

In another instance of canceling and postponing exams, the national testing agency has postponed the exams for the Joint Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET) on Friday.

These examinations were to be conducted from June 25 to June 27, 2024.

Why CSIR-NET Exams Postponed?

As per NTA, these exams were being postponed due to the presence of unavoidable circumstances and associated logistical issues.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, a senior NTA official opined, with cancellation of UGC-NET exams and the impending retest of NEET, it is currently impossible to conduct exams right away.

However, the NTA will re-schedule the exam and announce the results as early as possible.

‘NTA will soon reschedule the exam and declare results at the earliest so that the academic session does not get affected.’ said official.

Brief Information On CSIR-UGC-NET Examination

The joint examination of CSIR UGC NET is conducted to determine eligibility for the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Lectureship (LS)/Assistant Professor roles in Indian universities and colleges.

The examination covers five science subjects: Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Chemical Science, and Mathematics, in contrast to UGC-NET, which primarily focuses on humanities subjects.

Candidates who qualify for JRF are subsequently eligible for Lectureship/Assistant Professor roles provided they meet the UGC’s criteria.

Additionally, some candidates qualify exclusively for Lectureship/Assistant Professor roles based on their test performance, and their qualifications remain valid indefinitely.

The Applications for the test are opened twice a year via countrywide press notifications.

Moreover, the fellowship of Joint CSIR-UGC NET is a fixed-term grant with no guaranteed job, which includes a stipend of ₹31,000 per month for the initial two years and an annual contingent grant of ₹20,000.
