The swift rescue has ended a frightening episode for many families. The investigation will aim to provide answers and prevent similar incidents in the future.
A man held about 20 children inside an apartment in Mumbai’s Powai area on Thursday. Police surrounded the building and freed all the children. They then arrested the suspect. The quick rescue ended a tense hostage situation without physical harm to the children.
Mumbai Police said the incident took place at RA Studios in Powai on October 29. The accused identified himself as Rohit Arya. He had lured children to the flat by promising a shoot or an audition. The children came from different areas. Police moved fast after receiving reports.
Officers found the children safe. They contacted the parents and guardians. Officials then handed every child back to their families. The police took Arya into custody. They are questioning him to learn his motive.
Before the raid, Arya released a video online. In the clip, he said he wanted to speak with “a few people”. He also threatened violence. Mumbai Police quoted him and said, “The man seems to be mentally unstable, and our team handled the situation with utmost care.”
In the circulated video, Arya warned: "Instead of committing suicide, I have made a plan and have kept some kids hostage here. I don't have many demands. I have very simple demands." He also said, "I need to talk to some people."
He added, "If I am alive, I will do it. If I die, someone else will do it. But it will definitely happen." He repeated that he did not want money and denied being a terrorist.
Mumbai Police set up a cordon around the building. They used negotiation and careful entry tactics. Teams moved to secure the site and protect the children. Officials said they prioritized safety over speed. The children remained unharmed throughout.
After the arrest, the police started a formal probe. They are verifying Arya’s background. Investigators will examine his online posts and phone records. They will also check the claims he made in the video.
Police described Arya as possibly mentally unstable. They did not disclose any formal diagnosis. Investigators will seek medical and psychiatric evaluations. They will also question him about his stated desire to “talk” and about any grievances against “the system.”
Officials said they will release more information after verification. “The accused has been detained. We are verifying details and will share further information after due confirmation,” Mumbai Police said.
Parents and neighbors expressed shock and relief. They praised the police for a fast and careful response. Schools and local groups asked families to remain calm. The guardians thanked officers for returning the children safely.
