The Delhi government is asking permission from the apex court to use green crackers during the festival. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta called it India’s most precious celebration, deep-rooted in culture but with pollution choking a city already can green crackers be the cleaner way of celebrating without dropping traditions.
What are Green Crackers?
Green crackers are a new innovation in the fireworks fraternity developed by the premier scientific body of India, CSIR-NEERI, these are clean and less harmful substitutes for traditional fireworks. Conventional firecrackers such as barium, cadmium and nitrates are among the toxic substances that polluted the air as well as soil. Green crackers reduce such pollutants without compromising the sound and brightness of indicating that it was Diwali celebration.

How Do Green Crackers Work?
These environment-friendly crackers fall broadly into three categories SWAS, STAR and SAFAL.
- SWAS (Safe Water Releaser) generates water vapour while burning and traps dust and thus cuts down particulate emission.
- STAR (Safe Thermite Cracker) is designed to produce lower sound and smaller airborne particles.
- SAFAL (Safe Minimal Aluminium) reduces aluminium usage substituting it with magnesium for cleaner ignition and lower pollution.

Though not entirely pollution-free and these borne out innovations tend to make major reductions in environment harm done using firecrackers.
What Makes Them Different?
The conventional crackers, green alternatives are crafted with carefully selected chemicals that aim to reduce both noise and air pollution. They avoid harmful substances and often include components that actively suppress dust. The visual and audio effects may be slightly toned down but they provide a responsible way to celebrate without worsening environmental conditions.
Each green cracker bears a QR code link with the certified emission, chemistry and license information linked to it in order to verify authenticity. The Green products are also marked with the CSIR-NEERI logo. Experts warn consumers not to buy any unauthorized vendors since some would label normal fireworks as green.
