Western Disturbance Brings Rain to Delhi, Punjab, Haryana; Cold Wave to Follow: IMD

A western disturbance over central Pakistan and nearby regions is set to bring light to isolated rainfall in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi-NCR over the next two days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

IMD scientist Naresh Kumar explained the weather changes, saying, “Light to moderate rain is expected in the Himalayas today and tomorrow. Light rain is expected in Punjab, Haryana, and Delhi. Temperatures may rise on December 8 and 9. After December 9, the temperature will decrease, and cold wave conditions may develop.

Cold Wave Alert

Cold wave conditions are expected to intensify from December 9, initially impacting Rajasthan and spreading to Punjab and Haryana by December 11. The IMD defines cold waves as a significant temperature drop below climatological norms.

According to the IMD release:

  • West Rajasthan will experience cold wave conditions from December 9 to December 14.
  • Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh will face cold wave conditions starting December 11.

Impact on Delhi
The cold wave is likely to hit Delhi-NCR after December 9. Residents of the capital sought shelter in night shelters established by the Delhi government at locations like AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin Flyover on Saturday night to escape the chilly weather.

Air Quality Declines
Delhi’s air quality deteriorated further on Sunday, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 302, placing it in the “very poor” category.

The Supreme Court had recently allowed the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to relax restrictions under GRAP (Graded Response Action Plan) Stage IV to Stage II, owing to a brief improvement in air quality. However, GRAP Stages II and I remain in effect across Delhi-NCR.
