West Bengal witnessed its first arrest under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on Monday night, as police apprehended a man in South 24 Parganas district for allegedly molesting his minor daughter.
According to police sources, the man, employed in the Bengali television industry, was detained following a complaint filed by his wife accusing him of sexually assaulting their daughter while she was alone at home.
“The man has been charged under BNS section 76/351(3) and section 10 of the Pocso (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act. He has a history of harassing women. The investigation is ongoing,” stated a police official from South 24 Parganas district.
Authorities reported that the incident occurred while the girl was asleep at home and her mother was at work on July 30. “Exploiting the situation, the accused entered the room, locked the door, and sexually assaulted her. His wife returned unexpectedly and caught him in the act,” the officer added.
On Monday, at least 31 FIRs were registered across various police stations in Kolkata under the newly implemented BNS criminal law.
