"Waterlogging and traffic disruptions are likely." This warning from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) sets the tone for Mumbai today, as the financial capital gears up for another day of significant rainfall. While many parts of India experience relatively stable weather, the nation's forecast is sharply divided between severe rain events in the west and north, and calmer conditions elsewhere.

What is the Pan-India Weather Outlook Today?

Based on the overall forecast, India can expect a mix of thunderstorms and sunshine. There is a 40% chance of thunderstorms during the day, tapering off to a 25% chance of light rain overnight. Current conditions indicate high humidity levels nationwide, averaging around 84%, with a high temperature of 31°C and a low of 24°C.

People who spend a lot of time outside should exercise caution because the UV index is still high at 8. The Himalayan barrier, pressure systems, and monsoon patterns are the main factors influencing India's varied climate.

Why is Mumbai on High Alert?

The IMD has issued a heavy rain alert for Mumbai and its surrounding areas, marking it as a key weather event for the day. According to the forecast, there is a 70% likelihood of precipitation during the day and a 65% chance of showers that will last into the night. This comes on the heels of intense rainfall over recent days, which led to orange alerts in neighboring districts like Thane, Raigad, and Palghar. The persistent heavy rain activity significantly increases the risk of waterlogging and major traffic disruptions in key areas of the city. Commuters are advised to plan accordingly and avoid waterlogged underpasses.

What is the Situation in Pune?

The rain event extends to Pune, which is also experiencing the brunt of this weather system. The IMD predicts scattered thunderstorms for the city today with an even higher 85% chance of rain during the day. The city was under a red alert just two days ago due to intense overnight showers, indicating that the ground is already saturated and vulnerable to further precipitation.

What Happened in Dehradun?

In a separate and devastating severe weather event, a cloudburst struck Dehradun late on the night of September 15. The event triggered catastrophic flash floods and landslides, causing widespread destruction across the city and surrounding areas in Uttarakhand. A

Reports as of right now show a terrible death toll: at least 15 people have been killed, 16 are missing, and more than 900 are trapped. The area is still undergoing recovery and relief operations.

Delhi: The capital will see a generally clear sky with mist. The maximum temperature is expected to reach 33°C with 45% humidity.

Kolkata: Expect mist with a high of around 31°C and 79% humidity.

Chennai: The weather is expected to be warm and humid.

Bengaluru: The city will have a partly cloudy sky with a temperature around 25°C.
