Major Indian cities are experiencing starkly different weather patterns on Thursday, September 18, 2025. A complex interplay of monsoon systems is evident in northern India, including the capital, which is experiencing prolonged fog and mist while southern metros prepare for another round of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

The IMD’s Role in Weather Forecasting

The primary organization in charge of weather forecasting and monitoring is the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

It notifies authorities and the public of hazardous weather conditions by issuing color-coded notifications. An Orange Alert, for instance, advises people to “be prepared” for severe weather. While no red alert is highlighted for today, the high probability of rain in several cities has put officials on standby.

Southern Soaking

The southern peninsula is firmly in the grip of active monsoon conditions. Cities like Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata are facing a high likelihood of significant precipitation.

Bengaluru: After heavy thunderstorms yesterday, the city has a 75% chance of rain today. Residents can expect a cool day with temperatures peaking at only 25°C.

Chennai: The forecast predicts heavy thunderstorms with a 70% chance of rain. Maximum temperatures will be around 31°C amid high humidity.

Kolkata: With a high of 33°C, there is a 70% chance of thunderstorms, which will keep the city flooded.

This persistent rain means potential disruptions: waterlogging in low-lying areas, increased traffic congestion, and possible delays in flight and train schedules. It is recommended that citizens avoid going on a journey through flooded streets and schedule their commutes appropriately.

Will Mumbai’s Cloudy Weather Break?

Mumbai continues to experience classic monsoon weather. The day is expected to be cloudy with a 35% chance of moderate rain. The temperatures are steady, with a high of 29°C and a low of 26°C. The humidity remains high, making it feel sultry. The somewhat lesser likelihood of rain in comparison to the south points to sporadic showers rather than a steady downpour.

Other western cities like Pune and Ahmedabad are seeing mist and overcast conditions. Ahmedabad is reporting mist with 79% humidity, which is covering the city like a thick, wet blanket, while Pune is partly cloudy with a chance of patchy rain.

Delhi Sees Fog

Other western cities like Pune and Ahmedabad are seeing mist and overcast conditions. While Pune is partly cloudy with a probability of patchy rain, Ahmedabad is experiencing mist with a 79% humidity level that is densely covering the city like a wet blanket.

The capital is expecting a foggy day with possibilities of light rain. The temperatures are comparatively higher, with a maximum of 34°C, but the minimum of 27°C and high humidity levels create conditions perfect for the formation of mist and fog. This is a humid, haze-like phenomena that is typical during the monsoon withdrawal phase, not the winter fog for which Delhi is famous.

Hyderabad mirrors this with misty conditions, a temperature of 24°C, and a very high humidity level of 94%.
