India is currently a nation divided by weather, with the monsoon staging a vigorous farewell performance across the peninsula while northern states face the season’s first significant heat challenge. This Saturday presents a classic transitional pattern, marking the beginning of the monsoon’s retreat from northwestern India.
With an Orange Alert indicating possible disruption, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical cautions, especially for Hyderabad. Meanwhile, Delhi residents are facing different concerns as temperatures threaten to touch 38°C under largely clear skies.
Northern Plains
The story north of the Vindhyas is one of increasing heat and humidity. “We’re seeing classic signs of monsoon withdrawal from western Rajasthan,” explains Dr. Ananya Sharma, Senior Scientist at IMD. “The consequent sinking air masses over the Indo-Gangetic plain are leading to temperature spikes.”
Delhi-NCR wakes to misty conditions that will quickly give way to intense sunshine, pushing temperatures to a high of 38°C with minimums settling around 28°C. For Hyderabad in particular, where an Orange Alert indicates possible disruption, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued critical advisories.
Jaipur: Clear skies dominate with temperatures around 31°C
Chandigarh: Pleasant conditions with maximum around 28°C
Lucknow: Isolated light rain may provide temporary relief from the 33°C heat
Western Coast
The western coast, where the monsoon is still active, presents a different image. “We’re observing strong off-shore troughs along the Maharashtra coast, enhancing rainfall activity,” notes Dr. Sharma.
Mumbai and suburbs face a challenging day with moderate to heavy rainfall predicted. The IMD forecast includes:
- Thunderstorms with frequent lightning
- Gusty winds reaching 40-50 km/h
- Isolated very heavy rainfall (up to 20 cm in 24 hours)
- High tides coinciding with peak rainfall periods
Ahmedabad: Cloudy with scattered showers, high of 33°C
Pune: Light rain continues, providing relief at 26°C
Southern India
The most significant weather development comes from the Deccan plateau, where an Orange Alert has been issued for Hyderabad and surrounding areas.
“What makes this system notable is the convergence of moisture from both the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal,” warns Dr. Rajesh Kapoor, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai. “We’re expecting widespread rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls exceeding 20 cm.”
Bengaluru: Moderate rain continues, temperatures 20-28°C
Chennai: Generally cloudy with passing showers, high near 30°C
Thiruvananthapuram: Light to moderate thunderstorms likely
Eastern and Northeastern States
The eastern and northeastern states continue to experience normal monsoon conditions with:
Kolkata: Widespread rain, high around 29°C
Guwahati: Moderate showers, temperatures near 31°C
Patna: Rain likely, though warmer at 34°C
