We are identifying Muharram violence in Delhi through CCTV: Police

The Delhi police have registered three cases in connection with the violence on Saturday evening during a Muharram procession in west Delhi›s Nangloi. Several people started pelting stones at police personnel, resulting in six cops suffering injuries and damage to public property.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Harendra Singh said, the first FIR was filed by Nangloi SHO Prabhu Dayal. The complaint alleges that multiple ‹tazia› processions, which were scheduled in Nangloi, deviated from the predetermined route and attempted to enter Surajmal Stadium. As a result, a tense confrontation ensued between police personnel and the procession participants.
The second FIR, lodged by Nanag Ram, the law and order inspector at Nangloi police station, pertains to an incident at Nangloi Chowk. The third FIR was filed by Head Constable Mukesh Kumar for an incident near the metro station at Nangloi. All three cases were registered on Sunday, indicating the seriousness of the situation.
The procession, which began around 12 pm on Saturday, followed the predetermined route until around 5 pm, when some processions from Rohini district›s Prem Nagar and Aman Vihar areas deviated from the planned course. Instead of following the agreed-upon path, some individuals attempted to enter Surajmal Stadium and initiated altercations.
The police had made all efforts to pacify the situation. However, it was reported that several people brandished weapons, including knives, swords, sticks, and iron rods.
“In response to the police’s refusal, the organisers and their supporters started pelting stones at the officers. In the process, a sub-inspector named Parveen was attacked with a knife. In self-defence, Sub-Inspector retaliated, severely injuring the assailant,” the FIR stated.
Deputy Commissioner of Police, Harendra Singh confirmed that the police are currently reviewing CCTV footage from the area and analysing videos of the incidents that were widely shared on social media platforms during the events.
The situation in Nangloi is under control, and the deployment of police has been done to ensure that peace remains intact.
