Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday honored former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, describing him as a figure whose name will forever be etched in golden letters in Indian political history. Sidhu praised Singh’s legacy, calling him a legendary prime minister and a “cult figure” whose influence will continue to inspire generations.

In a heartfelt post on X, Sidhu wrote, “Whenever the history of character, ability, and honesty in Indian politics is written, your name will be on the first page in golden letters. There was no one like you before, and there will be no one like you after.”

Sidhu, a former cricketer turned politician, also shared an old video from his address at the 84th Congress Plenary session in 2018, where he had publicly apologized to Manmohan Singh for his past remarks. During the session, Sidhu, who had joined the Congress in 2017 after leaving the Bharatiya Janata Party, described Singh as both “a Sardar and also asardar (effective).”

“I want to apologize to Sardar Manmohan Singh with my head hanging down… What your silence has done, the noise created by the BJP could not achieve,” Sidhu had said at the time.

Manmohan Singh passed away on December 26 at the age of 92 after a prolonged illness, prompting an outpouring of tributes. The government declared a seven-day state mourning in his honor. Singh’s body will be taken from his residence to the Congress’s Akbar Road headquarters for public condolences before proceeding to Nigambodh Ghat for his funeral, where he will be laid to rest with full state honours.

The Union home ministry has also announced plans for a memorial dedicated to the former prime minister.
