Watch: Hundreds Of Job Seekers Flock To Mumbai For Interview, Stampede-Like Rush

A massive turnout of job seekers caused chaotic scenes at Air India Airport Services Ltd’s walk-in interview in Mumbai’s Kalina on Tuesday. Videos circulating on social media depict thousands of people scrambling towards the interview center, with some even climbing vehicles and trees in their haste. Authorities intervened to prevent potential stampedes amid the frenzy.

According to George Abram, General Secretary of the Aviation Industry Employees Guild, the recruitment process was marred by mismanagement, as reported by India Today. Air India Airport Services had announced openings for 2,216 vacancies for handyman and utility agent positions through a notification dated June 28. The positions are on a Fixed Term Contract basis for three years, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and operational needs.

The notification specified that Indian nationals meeting the requirements could apply, with reservations following Presidential Directives and subject to prevailing strength at the time of appointment. Despite the overwhelming response, the company assured that all CVs would be reviewed, and eligible candidates would be contacted for further processes.

This incident echoes a recent similar occurrence in Gujarat’s Bharuch, where hundreds converged for just 10 job openings at a chemical firm, Thermax Company, underscoring the intense competition and challenges in the job market.

The scenes highlight the desperation among job seekers amid economic uncertainties, emphasizing the need for streamlined and fair recruitment processes to manage such overwhelming responses effectively.
