Seven construction workers lost their lives after a wall collapsed at a construction site in Gujarat’s Mehsana district on Saturday, according to the police. A rescue operation is ongoing, as it is feared more workers may still be trapped beneath the rubble.
The incident occurred while laborers were digging a pit for an underground tank at a factory near Kadi town, about 37 km from the district headquarters. When the wall gave way, the workers were buried under the loose soil.
The collapse happened at around 1:45 pm at a private company’s construction site, trapping several workers, as confirmed by District Development Officer Dr. Hasrat Jasmine. “As per our information, 9-10 people were trapped, out of which 6 bodies have been recovered,” said Dr. Jasmine. A 19-year-old survivor was pulled out alive, providing hope to rescuers. According to him, there were 8-9 workers at the site, and efforts are still underway to rescue the remaining 2-3 trapped individuals. “We pray to God that we rescue them alive,” she added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing the Mehsana wall collapse as “extremely sad.” He extended his sympathies to the bereaved families, stating, “May God give them the strength to bear this pain,” and wished for the swift recovery of the injured. PM Modi also assured that the local administration, with the state’s support, is providing all necessary assistance.
Mehsana Superintendent of Police Tarun Duggal confirmed the ongoing rescue efforts as the death toll was updated.
