A decade after being evicted from the Delhi Assembly by force, BJP leader Vijender Gupta has made a comeback—this time as Speaker. The leader, who won the Rohini seat for a third term, assumed office after the BJP’s record win in the 2025 Delhi elections.

From Eviction to Authority: A Remarkable Political Journey

In 2015, dramatic scenes saw marshals pulling Gupta out of the Assembly amidst commotion over BJP’s OP Sharma allegedly making derogatory comments against then-AAP MLA Alka Lamba. Clad in a white kurta-pajama, Gupta fought hard, holding on to the furniture as half a dozen marshals tried to push him out.

Now, as the Speaker, he vows to see “healthy discussions” in the House. “I am thankful to the party for giving me this responsibility… to be Speaker of the Delhi Assembly. I hope we will have healthy discussions in the House,” Gupta said to PTI.

Vijender Gupta Vows to Reveal Alleged Irregularities

Gupta’s re-emergence as Speaker is likely to bring more heat on the erstwhile AAP government. After his victory in the election, he had promised to present 14 stalled Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports, which he asserts would reveal “how the AAP deceived the people of Delhi with false promises while indulging in financial irregularities running into crores.”

He also accused the AAP of having previously kept BJP legislators from tabling these reports in the Assembly. The AAP has so far remained quiet on Gupta’s appointment.

Vijendra Gupta, once the Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, was said to be in line for the post of Chief Minister. But first-timer Rekha Gupta of Shalimar Bagh was the BJP’s ultimate choice, who became the fourth woman and the second BJP woman Chief Minister of Delhi.

The 2015 Assembly Showdown: What Happened?

On November 30, 2015, there was pandemonium in the Delhi Assembly following BJP’s OP Sharma’s allegedly derogatory comments against AAP’s Alka Lamba. Then-Speaker Ram Niwas Goel directed Vijender Gupta to vacate the House until 4 PM, but he did not budge. Marshals were then summoned to remove him.

Gupta was resistant, grasping the benches as Assembly officials tried to usher him out. In his forced removal, he charged the Speaker with bias, saying, “Three BJP members were insulted and attacked by AAP MLAs, but they have not taken any action against them.”

Rekha Gupta’s Sudden Ascension to Chief Minister

Meanwhile, Rekha Gupta was surprised at being appointed as the Chief Minister of Delhi. “I did not know that I would be becoming the Chief Minister when I left home,” she told NDTV.

It was generally assumed that Parvesh Verma, the twice former Lok Sabha MP who had beaten AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in the New Delhi constituency, would get the job. But in a shocking turn, the BJP nominated Rekha Gupta, with Verma himself recommending her name.

Verma is now part of six other BJP leaders in the new Delhi cabinet.
