Protests erupted near the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarakhand as 40 labourers remained trapped inside since a section collapsed on Sunday. Workers, impatient over the delay in rescue operations, expressed frustration as fresh debris hindered the progress of auger drilling machines. Despite ongoing relief efforts, natural obstacles impeded drilling speed, prompting authorities to arrange for a heavy auger drilling machine to expedite the process. The Uttarakhand DGP, Ashok Kumar, assured that central agencies, along with the Air Force, are working relentlessly to evacuate all workers safely.
District officials, including the DM Abhishek Ruhela, provided reassurance to the anxious families gathered at the site. A technical team, led by Deepak Malik, a drilling and boring expert, is spearheading efforts to establish a passage for the trapped workers. The collapse occurred during the construction of the Brahmakhal-Yamunotri National Highway tunnel, with officials emphasizing that workers inside are receiving essential supplies and medical aid through tubes. The rescue operation continues in Uttarkashi, with hope pinned on the imminent arrival of advanced drilling equipment.
