Union Minister Urges Development Of Offbeat Tourist Destinations To Ease Congestion In J&K

Kashmir: Highlighting the unparalleled beauty of Jammu and Kashmir, Union Minister for Tourism and Culture Gajendra Singh Shekhawat emphasized on Wednesday that the popular tourist spots are becoming overcrowded, urging a shift towards promoting lesser-known destinations. Shekhawat assured that the central government is committed to enhancing road and mobile connectivity, alongside establishing robust infrastructure at these emerging tourist spots.

Speaking to the press during an event at the International Convention Centre (ICC) by Dal Lake, Shekhawat acknowledged the heavy influx of tourists causing congestion at renowned destinations.

“The surge in tourist numbers at well-known sites necessitates the promotion of virgin and offbeat destinations across the country, including J&K,” he said.

Responding to concerns about the lack of infrastructure, mobile, and road connectivity at offbeat locations in Kashmir like Bangus and Dodhpathri, Shekhawat stated, “We have requested all states, including J&K, to develop a roadmap for improving infrastructure and connectivity at these spots. The Centre is prepared to provide full support to these initiatives.”

Addressing the issue of a shortage of tourist guides in J&K, Shekhawat assured that efforts are underway to increase their numbers. “We have initiated online modules to enhance the skills of guides. Additionally, new training programs for both current and aspiring guides will be conducted during the off-season, which will help increase their numbers,” he added.

On the topic of regional security, Shekhawat expressed concern over the political turmoil in Bangladesh, where an elected government was recently overthrown. “We are vigilant and taking all necessary measures to ensure the situation does not adversely affect India. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, terrorism is on the decline, and Naxalism is now confined to just four districts in the country,” he said.
