Union Minister unveils bold plan for airport expansion across India

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said on Wednesday that 200–220 more airports, heliports, and water aerodromes will be built in the country over the next 5 years.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia addressed the media in the national capital, highlighting the remarkable progress achieved by the aviation sector during the nine years of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government. Scindia emphasized that the achievements of the Modi government in the past nine years surpassed those of the previous 68 years. The number of airports has increased from 74 to 148, and the ambitious goal is to build 200-220 airports, including heliports and water aerodromes, within the next five years.

In addition, Scindia shared that eight new airports have been constructed in the northeastern region of the country, where some states previously lacked proper airport infrastructure. Today, Arunachal Pradesh boasts three new airports, and Sikkim also has its own airport.

Regarding metro capacity, the minister revealed that India currently has six large metros, namely Bombay, Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Kolkata, with a combined capacity of 22 crore. The objective is to double the capacity of these six metros, including Jevar and Navi Mumbai, within the next eight years.
