The University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 54 state private universities across India as defaulters for not following mandatory guidelines. Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number, with 10 institutions making it to the list.
Why UGC Issued Notices?
In June 2024, the UGC instructed all universities to post key information on their websites. These included documents verified by the registrar, data for inspection, and key academic information accessible to students and the public.
Despite repeated reminders, many institutions did not comply. UGC has now issued notices under Section 13 of the UGC Act, 1956, to those defaulting universities.

Prominent Names in the Defaulters List
Prominent names include Azim Premji University (Bhopal), Amity University campuses in Patna, Ranchi, and Mohali, and Dr D.Y. Patil Dnyan Prasad University (Pune). The move raises concerns about transparency in private universities, which continue to enrol students while failing to meet UGC norms.
