In response to mob violence over the death of a tribal youth, internet services have been suspended, and large gatherings banned in a Tripura district. Four people have been arrested, according to the police.
Despite the imposition of prohibitory orders and the deployment of a large contingent of security forces, tension persists in the tribal-dominated Ganda Twisa subdivision of Tripura’s Dhalai district.
The violence, which erupted on Friday night, escalated into vandalism and arson following the death of a tribal youth earlier that day.
Officials reported that crowds went on a rampage, burning homes and looting shops in Ganda Twisa after 20-year-old Parameshwar Reang died from injuries sustained in an assault by a group from another community on July 7.
The four arrested individuals are linked to the assault.
