The Trinamool Congress on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court’s direction to involve judicial officers in completing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, calling it a major victory for the people of the State.

A Bench led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and N.V. Anjaria, directed the Calcutta High Court to depute serving and former judicial officers to assist in the SIR exercise. The poll body has been asked to publish the processed electoral rolls on February 28.

Launching a sharp attack on the Chief Election Commissioner, the Trinamool alleged that the Election Commission had acted with “arrogance” and attempted to sideline legitimate claims during the revision process. In a social media post, the party said the court’s intervention had “dragged the Commission back to reality” and ensured that genuine voters would not be excluded.

The ruling party said that all claims, objections and cases involving alleged discrepancies would now be handled by judicial officers appointed by the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, ensuring impartial scrutiny.

The development is significant as the SIR exercise is underway in the poll-bound State.

Reacting to the order, West Bengal BJP chief spokesperson Debjit Sarkar accused the Trinamool of opposing the revision process from the outset and said it would be responsible if Assembly elections were delayed. He alleged that law and order had deteriorated, claiming attacks on BDO offices reflected “party rule” rather than rule of law.

CPI(M) state secretary Md. Salim said the court’s observations pointed to a breakdown of confidence in the process. He described the SIR as disruptive and warned of protests if genuine voters’ names were removed.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had appeared in person before the Supreme Court on February 4, 2026, in connection with the matter.
