As global economies face increasing uncertainty, Switzerland’s State Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Alexandre Fasel, has stated that trade wars are never beneficial and urged for open markets and free trade policies. Speaking in an interview, Fasel emphasized that India must play a larger role in global politics and trade.

Trade Wars and Economic Uncertainty

Fasel pointed out that the current global trade environment is unpredictable due to proposed tariff hikes by major economies. He cautioned that such measures could:

  • Increase prices and fuel inflation
  • Disrupt supply chains
  • Negatively impact consumers and businesses worldwide

He noted that the India-EFTA Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) will strengthen India’s trade relations with European nations like Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

India’s Growing Global Influence

Fasel also stressed India’s diplomatic strength, stating that the country is well-positioned to play a key role in international geopolitical affairs. He highlighted India’s efforts to amplify the voice of the Global South, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision.

Strengthening India-Switzerland Ties

The Swiss official is in New Delhi for foreign office consultations, discussing bilateral trade, strategic partnerships, and diplomatic collaborations. With the India-EFTA Desk now operational, stronger trade relations between India and European nations are expected.
