Tensions Flare in Nagpur Over Aurangzeb Tomb Row, Devendra Fadnavis Urges Peace

Violence erupted in Nagpur’s Mahal area after tensions flared over demands for the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb. The unrest followed a protest by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), leading to clashes between two groups.

Stone Pelting and Arson Reported

As tensions ran high, cars, including fire tenders, were torched and a number of firemen injured. The incident was controlled with police intervention. Deputy Commissioner of Police Archit Chandak explained, “Stone pelting was going on, so we showed a show of force and used tear gas also. A couple of vehicles were burnt, and some police were hurt.”

Leaders Appeal for Calm

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis appealed to the people to keep peace, stressing that legal process be followed for Aurangzeb’s tomb. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari also assured the public that “the government will take action against those involved in illegal activities.”

Political Reactions and Controversy

The Congress also blamed the governing government for stirring communal tensions. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar commented, “Deliberate attempts are being made to spread hate and provoke discord between the two communities.”

Controversy revolves around a statement by Samajwadi Party leader Abu Azmi, when he referred to Aurangzeb as a good administrator. His comments during a debate regarding the film Chhaava incited sharp responses and resulted in police cases against him.
