The Telangana unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the India–US trade breakthrough announced following a phone call from US President Donald Trump to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as a major diplomatic and economic victory for India.
State BJP Chief Spokesperson N. V. Subhash said the decision of the United States to reduce tariffs on Indian goods to 18 per cent marks a significant turning point in bilateral trade relations between the world’s two largest democracies. He noted that the move is expected to further strengthen the strategic partnership between India and the United States.
Subhash said the rollback of retaliatory tariffs earlier raised to as high as 50 per cent and the complete withdrawal of the additional 25 per cent levy linked to India’s purchase of Russian oil reflect growing global recognition of India’s economic strength and diplomatic standing under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
He pointed out that the official confirmation from the White House, along with President Trump’s public remarks on his social media platform Truth, where he described Prime Minister Modi as a “powerful and respected leader,” underscores the personal credibility and global stature enjoyed by the Indian Prime Minister.
The BJP leader said the wide ranging discussions between the two leaders on trade, energy security and the Russia–Ukraine conflict demonstrate the depth and maturity of the India–US strategic partnership, which continues to grow beyond temporary policy differences. “The rollback of penalties related to India’s energy purchases is a clear acknowledgment of India’s sovereign right to pursue an independent foreign policy while protecting its national interests,” Subhash said, adding that India’s diversified energy sourcing has ensured stability without compromising diplomatic balance.
Referring to India’s expanding global trade footprint, he said the recently concluded India–EU trade agreement and similar pacts with other nations have reinforced India’s position as a confident global player with strong negotiating leverage.
