In a major enhancement to India's military strength, the Indian Army took delivery of the first three Apache attack helicopters on Monday. The Boeing-manufactured choppers, coated in desert camouflage colors, arrived at Hindon Airbase near Delhi, escorted by an Antonov transport aircraft from the United States.

It is for the first time that the Indian Army will be flying Apache helicopters, a platform already tested in service by the Indian Air Force. The introduction of these attack helicopters is set to significantly boost the Army's offensive capabilities and battlefield readiness.

Deployment Planned Near Pakistan Border

The newly commissioned Apaches will be stationed in Jodhpur, Rajasthan—operationally near the western frontier with Pakistan. The helicopters are known for their prowess in hostile environments and popularly called "tanks in the air" because of their deadly firepower and sturdy construction.

"Milestone moment for Indian Army as first batch of Apache helicopters for Army Aviation lands today in India. These cutting-edge platforms will enhance operational strength of the #IndianArmy immensely," said the Indian Army as they released the first photos of the helicopters in India.

Part of $600 Million Indo-US Deal

The delivery is under a $600 million contract signed in 2020 during the visit of then-President Donald Trump to India. The deal involves six Apache helicopters, where the first three have arrived after delays due to supply chain factors and changing geopolitical alignments. The remaining three are also likely to arrive soon.

Upon offloading, the helicopters will be subjected to rigorous acceptance trials, involving testing of sensors, communication equipment, navigation units, and weapons systems before being inducted entirely into active service.

Army's First, IAF Already Operating 22 Apaches

Though this is the Army's first induction into Apache operations, the Indian Air Force already has 22 such helicopters in two squadrons stationed at Pathankot (Punjab) and Jorhat (Assam).

Besides attack missions, Apache helicopters can perform reconnaissance, escort, and peacekeeping missions. Their state-of-the-art targeting capabilities provide accurate engagement under unfavorable weather conditions. The Apaches feature night vision, thermal imagery, and high-speed communications, which are best suited for contemporary warfare.

The induction of these helicopters brings the Indian Army to the forefront in enhancing air combat capability along vital frontiers.
