Heavy rains drenched Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, on Sunday, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning. Due to a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal, these showers marked the closing phase of the Northeast Monsoon.

Weather Conditions in Chennai
By 7:30 am, Chennai recorded a temperature of 24°C, while the air quality index (AQI) stood at 74, reflecting satisfactory air conditions. According to the Sameer app, the city’s environment remained relatively clean despite the weather disruptions. Moreover, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) forecasted moderate rain with light thunderstorms until 10 am, affecting Chennai and several neighboring districts, including Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, and Puducherry.
Rainfall Spreads Across Tamil Nadu
Meanwhile, heavy rain lashed Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram, and Tenkasi. Additionally, moderate rain occurred in areas like Villupuram, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai. Consequently, waterlogging in various regions disrupted traffic flow and caused difficulties for daily commuters.
Meteorological Factors Behind the Showers
The rainfall resulted from an atmospheric low-level circulation over the southwestern Bay of Bengal near the Tamil Nadu coast. This phenomenon, typical for December and January, signals the tail-end of the monsoon. Furthermore, the rains arrived shortly after the state’s vibrant Pongal celebrations, adding a seasonal twist to the weather.
Rain to Persist Temporarily
The IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall will continue for the next two days across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. However, beginning January 22, the region is expected to transition to dry weather conditions.
Chennai’s Forecast
Chennai is likely to experience a partly cloudy sky on Sunday, with chances of moderate rain or thunderstorms. While the minimum temperature will hover around 22°C, the maximum is expected to reach 28°C. Consequently, residents are advised to remain cautious of waterlogging and plan their activities accordingly.
