What began as a tragic collapse on the polo field has now snowballed into one of the most talked-about corporate dramas of the year. Sunjay Kapur, industrialist and former chairman of Sona Comstar, died on June 12 in London under circumstances that his mother, Rani Kapur, now claims are “highly suspicious.” She has sent a criminal complaint to British authorities, calling for an in-depth investigation into what she believes may not have been a natural death at all.

Her allegations come amid a heated succession dispute over the ₹30,000-crore Sona Comstar group, a legacy she says was built with “care, sacrifice, and love” by her and her late husband.

“I Still Don’t Know What Happened to My Son”

Breaking her silence after her son’s death, an emotional Rani Kapur told ANI:

“I’m old now and need closure before I go. I may be old and frail, but my memory of being with my husband when Sona was set up is strong… Our family legacy must not be lost.”

In her formal complaint to the UK authorities, she alleged foul play, citing “credible and concerning evidence” involving potential “murder, abetment, conspiracy, fraud, and forgery.”

She also raised red flags over allegedly forged legal and financial documents, questionable asset transfers, and coercion, all of which, she claims, were orchestrated by individuals who financially benefited from Sunjay’s death.

International Ties, National Shockwaves

As Sunjay Kapur was an American citizen, Rani Kapur may also take her plea to US authorities, expanding this case beyond the UK. Her demand? A full international investigation with forensic audits, CCTV retrieval, and cross-border cooperation.

She suspects a “coordinated transactional conspiracy” involving entities in the UK, India, and possibly the US. If confirmed, this would not only upend the Sona Comstar empire’s commercial roots but also change the course of one of India’s most well-known business families’ histories.

Sona Comstar Pushes Back—Hard

While the matriarch seeks answers, Sona Comstar is in full damage control mode. The company, in a strongly worded filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, claimed she has had no role since 2019 and dismissed her statements as “baseless” and “legally untenable.”

Worse, they’ve issued her a legal notice, accusing her of spreading “false and damaging information.” But Rani Kapur isn’t backing down. She alleges being locked in a room post her son’s death and forced to sign documents, something she calls “highly suspicious.”

Her further claims include being cut off from her own bank accounts and being made financially dependent on a handful of people.

No Closure in Sight—Yet

Even as she begged the board to postpone the company’s AGM, it went ahead as scheduled. The company remains unmoved, asserting that the board has acted well within its rights. But for Rani Kapur, this is not just about boardrooms and shares, it’s about justice for her son.

“I will not be making any further comments,” she said, adding, “My legal team will address everything necessary.”

As the legal and emotional drama unfolds across continents, what remains is a grieving mother’s quest for truth and the unraveling of a legacy mired in suspicion and power struggles.
