Stunt Artist SM Raju Killed During HighSpeed Crash
Guru stuntman SM Raju, who has performed some of the most audacious action scenes in Tamil cinema, died on Sunday morning while filming a risky stunt for Arya's next release 'Vettuvan' directed by Pa Ranjith.
The accident took place in Tamil Nadu when the crew was filming a toppling car sequence. Shocking images from the location reveal Raju driving a car at top speed, which suddenly falls over and crashes into pieces, with the car wrecked. The crew members happened to run towards the place and dragged Raju from the remains, only to find that he had passed away due to injuries. What was supposed to be a maneuvered action scene turned out to be a sudden tragedy, shocking the film community.
Actor Vishal, who had collaborated with Raju on many films, was quick to acknowledge the devastating news. He posted a heartfelt tribute on X (formerly Twitter), describing disbelief and sadness:
"So hard to believe that stuntman Raju died during a car toppling sequence," Vishal said.
I have known Raju for so many years, and he has done so many dangerous stunts in my films again and again. He was such a courageous man. My heartfelt condolences, and may his soul rest in peace."
Vishal also personally promised to stand with Raju's family, "Not only this tweet, I shall surely be present at the future of his family as he belongs to the same film fraternity, and also for his contribution towards so many movies."
Stunt choreographer Stunt Silva was also among those who expressed their sorrow over Raju's passing on Instagram, terming it a big loss for the stunt fraternity:
"One of our talented car jumping stunt actors, SM Raju, passed away today performing car stunts. Our stunt union and Indian film world will miss him."
Raju had made a name in the Tamil cinema world for his accuracy, daring, and commitment to the choreography of action. He was involved in dozens of movies and was highly regarded by colleagues and directors.
Until now, neither director Pa Ranjith nor actor Arya has made a public comment on the incident. 'Vettuvan', as reported to be in the final stages of production, has an ensemble cast featuring Sobhita Dhulipala, Attakathi Dinesh, Kalaiyarasan, and Lingesh.
The film fraternity has demanded more safety precautions on sets, particularly for high-risk stunts, after this tragic loss.
