Student Suicides in Kota Drop by 50%, District Collector Reveals

The district administration of Kota, Rajasthan, reported a 50% decrease in student suicides in 2024 compared to the previous year. Known as a hub for IIT-JEE coaching, the city has implemented several measures to address the mental health and safety of its students.

District Collector Ravindra Goswami revealed that 17 student suicide cases were recorded in 2024, a sharp decline from 26 cases in 2023. “This is a significant achievement, showcasing the effectiveness of the efforts made. We hope this positive trend continues,” Goswami stated.

Efforts Driving the Change

The decline in suicides is credited to strict compliance with guidelines for coaching centres and hostels. Measures include:

  • Gatekeeper Training: Hostel wardens are trained under WHO norms to identify and address early signs of distress among students.
  • SOS Help Services: A 24/7 helpline is available to provide immediate support.
  • Interactive Initiatives: Programs such as ‘Dinner with Collector’ and ‘Samwad’ facilitate direct interaction between students and the administration to address their concerns.
  • Safety Measures: The deployment of the Kalika Squad ensures the safety of women and girl students.

Impact on Kota’s Coaching Industry

Despite the positive changes, stakeholders in Kota’s coaching industry highlight a decline in the number of students. Enrollment has dropped to around 85,000-1,00,000, compared to the earlier 2-2.5 lakh. This has affected annual revenues, which have halved from ₹6,500-7,000 crore to ₹3,500 crore.

‘Kota Cares’ and Cultural Outreach

The administration recently launched the ‘Kota Cares’ program, aimed at fostering the overall well-being and safety of students. This initiative also includes inviting Kota alumni to mentor current aspirants, showcasing the city’s evolution into a more student-friendly environment.

Additionally, events like the three-day Kota Mahotsav were organized to promote the city as a cultural and tourist destination, offering students a refreshing break from academics.

Message to Parents

In a New Year letter to parents, Collector Goswami reiterated Kota’s commitment to the safety and development of their children. “Kota is fully committed to ensuring a secure and supportive environment for students,” he emphasized.
