A tragic incident exploded in the city of Karur in Tamil Nadu, during a political rally organized by an actor turned politician, Vijay leader of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party. Celebrations to what was to become a victory of welcoming ceremony for supporters turned fatal as the crowd grew to massive size and tightness resulted in a stampede. Reports say at least 29 people children included have died and many more are seriously injured.
Thousands gathered for the arrival of Vijay, but the situation turned worse when the crowd began swelling beyond controls and People began collapsing, according to local media and eyewitnesses due to suffocation, heat and lack of space more people fainted, causing complete chaos. Images and videos from the scene show a distressed Vijay atop a campaign vehicle throwing water bottles to the crowd while calling for police assistance as people began to lose consciousness.

Vijay ended in a slightly shorter time for his speech with the area around it was heavily overcrowded and did not allow enough movement space for ambulances to reach any of the affected persons. Many without consciousness managed to reach the local hospitals. The medical staff was already overburdened with work, with extra patients pouring in and there were more family members.
Police authorities in an attempt to control viral crowds that had suddenly became uncontrollable at the rally site as well as the hospitals had to resort to baton charges to disperse people. This sparked more panic, creating questions regarding the level of preparedness and safety protocols over huge public gatherings, those involving high-profile personalities.
The official confirmation of the exact number of casualties remains pending. This incident has cast a shadow on the political campaign while raising serious clouds about safety measures on mass events. Questions about accountability, good crowd management and proper planning of rallies that may easily overwhelm available infrastructure are being raised as the nation mourns this tragedy.
