Tuesday morning in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh, a stage falling during a Jain Nirvana festival resulted in at least five fatalities and dozens of injuries.
The accident occurred during the ‘Nirvana Laddu Parv’ event honoring the first Tirthankara in Jainism, Bhagwan Adinath, at the Jain College ground in Baraut, where a temporary stage made of bamboos and wood collapsed.

Police say that in the presence of Jain monks, hundreds of followers had gathered at the occasion to give laddoos to Lord Adinath.
Senior officers, including the SP and Additional SP, were on site to see to the situation and rescue activities were started right away.
Around 40 people were hurt when a wooden structure collapsed during the Jain community event, said District Magistrate Asmita Lal said. Five people have died; twenty are still in therapy; twenty were sent home following treatment.”
