As the city and surrounding areas were battered by torrential rain on Monday, they experienced significant waterlogging. More rain is expected over the next 48 hours, according to the red signal issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). In order to protect students, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also announced a break for all colleges and schools during the afternoon shift.
Several parts of the city went underwater. Visuals of flooded streets, stranded commuters, and long traffic jams surfaced across social media. The Andheri subway had to be closed after water levels rose dangerously. Videos also showed school children stranded inside buses at Kings Circle in Gandhi Market, before Mumbai Police personnel rescued them and moved them to Matunga Police Station.
Luxury Cars and Daily Struggles
A video from Veera Desai Road in Andheri West showed a luxury Mercedes stuck in floodwater. Another viral post read, “This is South Mumbai- Prabhadevi, where you buy 15-20 crores of Flat”, adding the hashtag # MumbaiRainsDoes n’tCare. For many residents, the scene was a reminder of how recurring floods disrupt life in a city with some of the country’s most expensive real estate.

With rain showing no signs of stopping, the IMD upgraded its advisory to a ‘red alert’ for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts.

In an official statement, it said, “Keeping in mind the safety of students due to the continuous rains that have been continuing since morning, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Bhushan Gagrani has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Mumbai in the second semester, i.e, after noon on Monday, August 18.”
Social Media Reacts
Along with official updates, social media platforms were filled with memes, frustration, and humor, reflecting how Mumbaikars have learned to cope with the monsoon’s fury. However, beneath the humor lies a harsh reality—every year, waterlogging paralyzes one of India’s busiest cities.
The IMD has warned that the heavy rains may continue for the next 48 hours. Officials urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety guidelines.
