Sonam Wangchuk's wife, Gitanjali Angmo, moved to the Supreme Court to challenge his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) by the Ladakh administration on Friday.
The activist was detained a few days after violence erupted in Leh as protesters demanding Ladakh's statehood clashed with police. Wangchuk has been one of the front-runners of the statehood demands and calls for the extension of the Sixth Schedule to Ladakh.
Gitanjali Angmo had previously vented her ire against the government for her husband's detention, accusing them of making him an "anti-national" under a "witch-hunt." "There has been a witch-hunt going on against us. We have produced all papers explaining the charges to CBI officials and to the Income Tax Department, but a smokescreen is being generated to defame Sonam so that the movement for the Sixth Schedule may be derailed," she accused.
Her remarks followed the Leh Police's mention of Sonam Wangchuk's visit to Pakistan and an allegation that the activist had links with the neighboring country.

Ladakh Director General of Police SD Singh Jamwal said that Wangchuk was being probed in relation to the recent arrest of a Pakistani intelligence agent, who had shared videos of his protests through the border. To this, the wife of the activist had retorted, "If they are saying that a Pakistani was seen in Ladakh, our question is 'How did you let the security lapse?' This is not to be explained to Sonam Wangchuk. MHA must explain why a Pakistani was in Ladakh. After his arrest, Wangchuk was shifted to the Jodhpur Central Jail and is currently held there.
